2002 Blue and Gold "Lost Matches"
Match #15 Capt. Don Zaremba (GOLD) +1 All Square vs. Greg Clark (BLUE) This could very well go down as the match of the day. On the strength of strong early play, Greg shot to a 4 up lead after the 6th hole. The momentum then shifted and Don won the next 5 holes in a row to take a 1 hole lead after 11. Back to even on the next hole, Don then charged to a 2 up position with wins at 14 and 15, but Greg came back to claim the next two to even it (winning the par 5 17th with a triple bogey 8 mind you!). All square going into 18, both players carded doubles on the last to put a thankful end to this 18 hole slugfest. No wonder Don was so thirsty at the end.Match #16 Capt. Willie Ross (BLUE) d. Jim Retzlaff (GOLD) +1 1 UP It is very improbable that you could have the two best matches of the day occur in the same foursome but one can make a strong case for that here. Friendly back and forth sparring over the first 6 holes produced no tangible results. The momentum then swung over to Jim as he caught fire with 4 consecutive pars to go into a commanding 4 up position after 10. Captain Ross served notice that he was not going to roll over by carding a birdie on the 11th and superior play over the next 5 holes allowed him to square the match at the 16th. Both players parred the 17th, and then Willie took the match with a very well done birdie on the last. This was the first time Willie had the lead all day. By the way, did I mention that he played the last 8 holes in 1 under par?
