Captain’s Chosen for 2003 Blue and Gold Cup

NEWSFLASH

May 2nd, 2003

The Captain’s for the 2003 Blue and Gold Cup, to be played on Friday, July 25th at the beautiful Cross Creek Golf Club in Temecula, Ca. have been announced. For the defending Champion Gold side, tournament veteran and Director Bill Schack has been given the task of retaining the cup. Bill, shown at left, is a veteran of 12 CBI’s and is a three-time champion. He is also the defending champion. Bill also carries with him an impressive Blue and Gold match play record. At the press conference in Los Angeles announcing the pick’s, tournament organizer and Gold team member Charlie Clark stated, "It was a very easy pick this year. Bill was all along slotted for a Gold captaincy and I am very confident his desire and enthusiasm towards the job will serve his teammates well." Bill is also famous amongst certain inner circle members for having a volatile temperament on the golf course. While it is kept in check most of the time by Bill’s strong inner discipline, sporadic explosions have been the subjects of many interesting stories told over a cold beverage. We do not expect to see anything like this at the Blue and Gold, but to get a read on Bill’s attitude towards the event please read his recent post on the Message Board.

On the Blue side, Greg Clark has announced the selection of Bob "Stone Cold" Anderson as Captain. Bob will be given the difficult chore of trying to wrestle back the cup from the Gold. Bob is also a very tenured tournament veteran, having played in 10 CBI’s and winning the event in 1996 at Aptos Seascape. Bob is also a very accomplished match play golfer with a strong Blue and Gold record. Most notably Bob was the one to stop the juggernaut match play streak of Jeff Dense when he bested him 1 up in a thrilling match at Poppy Hills in 2000. "Stone Cold" took it to Jeff again in their rematch last year at Poppy Ridge. This savvy match play experience makes him an excellent choice for the Blue side. Greg Clark commented, "Stone Cold is the right man for the job at the right time. It is not easy to beat Jeff Dense in match play. He humiliated me at San Clemente in 1997 8 and 6. Stone Cold has what it takes to get the job done, and as such, I expect nothing but the proper result." All eyes will be on Bob at Cross Creek to see if this is true, and the ensuing Captain’s match between these two warriors may well again decide the fate of the entire event. These two picks are both excellent choices, and we all await July 25th to see who will be able to taste the sweet flavor of victory from the cup.
